Sign Stallworth
Cleveland Plain Dealer just announced he will be released before March 20 and will likely sign for vet minimum.

Vet minimum? Sure.
But what has he REALLY done for any team he has been on? I'm not so sure he's any better then Bryant Johnson, he's just a bigger name.

Cleveland Browns cut Donte' Stallworth
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 8, 2010 5:36 PM ET
The Cleveland Browns wasted no time today in releasing wide receiver Donte' Stallworth, who was reinstated to the NFL upon the completion of the Super Bowl.
The team announced that they had terminated Stallworth's contract in an understated item on the official web site headlined, "Browns make roster move."
Stallworth was suspended for the entire 2009 season as a result of his DUI manslaughter conviction. He played the 2008 season for the Browns, the 2007 season for the Patriots, the 2006 season for the Eagles and the 2002 through 2005 seasons for the Saints.
Today's transaction makes Stallworth an unrestricted free agent. It's unknown whether any team has any interest in signing him

It was made official today. I think the Lions should at least take a look

Better then wasting a draft pick on another WR

So did Williams?
Yeah, but maybe we could draft the 82nd WR in the last 10 years...or keep trying to find good FA's with the skilled positions versus the drafts

It's being looked into apparently...

Agent Drew Rosenhaus said Tuesday that receiver Donte' Stallworth, who was reinstated Sunday night and cut by the Browns on Monday, will be working out for an unnamed NFL team on Wednesday.
Per a league source, that team is the Lions.
Stallworth entered the league as a first-round draft pick in 2002. The Lions used a first-round pick on wideouts in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2007

Could be a interesting signing if he still has his speed. Lions still need a WR that can catch the underneath stuff. Hopefully, they can get Lance Moore from NO.

Another report on the Lions interest.
Quote:
Report: Donte Stallworth will work out for Lions
By Tom Kowalski
February 09, 2010, 7:06PM
UPDATED AT 7:23 P.M.
It's no secret that the Detroit Lions are in the market for a No. 2 receiver and now it's not a secret about who the team might be looking at. According to ProFootballTalk.com, the Lions are the "unnamed'' team that will give former Browns receiver Donte Stallworth a workout.
Team spokesman Bill Keenist said the Lions do not typically discuss off-season workout schedules and would not confirm the report.
It's already been a busy week for Stallworth. On Monday, he was reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after Stallworth was suspended for the 2009 season after pleading guilty to DUI felony manslaughter. The Browns then released Stallworth.
Stallworth was a first-round pick by the New Orleans Saints in 2002 and had his best year in 2005 -- his free agent contract season. Stallworth had 70 catches for 945 yards and seven touchdowns. He spent the next three years with three different teams -- Philadelphia, New England and Cleveland.
In 2008, Stallworth started just seven games (playing in a total of 11) and had 17 catches for 170 yards and one touchdown.

Stallworth to me is just another .... you know ... that guy we had this year. Shit I forget his name. You know who I'm talking about, that worthless POS we signed for the slot receiver.

If i remember right i think he had one of the fastest 40 times ever at the combine. I think he ran a 4.19 or something close to that time. I'm sure he isn't that fast anymore but should still have good wheels.
I actually just checked and it was a 4.29 at the combine.

I think he's absolutely sincere in his apology about killing someone. I still don't see him as a #2.

He is nothing more then a deep threat. Will basically be a decoy out there if they sign him with the occasional Stafford bomb to him. His speed could make the safeties play more deep with him and CJ on the outside. Could open up some running holes possibly. I agree though he is not a great #2.

He has never played up to his full potential, maybe being with CJ will help him. But I'd rather have the Lions target guys like this all day then draft another WR right now.

Stallworth will just be another guy, just another filler WR who won't really be able to do what we need him to do, like Bryant Johnson. I don't care if we sign him or not as a depth player, but if they bring him in saying he's the #2 guy we've needed, it's the wrong move.

If they use him exclusivly as a deep threat I could go with that. We have fuck nutz for a slot receiver if he can hold onto the ball and of course CJ on the other side.

Maybe if we get the #1 pick in next years Prison Draft we can select Plaxico.
Past Prison Draft picks:
Vick 09'
Stallworth 10'
Burress 11'

I don't have a problem with Stallworth if he's good enough. They better include a "you screw up again, you're gone" clause in his contract. Granted the League is basically doing that but having it in your contract makes it hit home a little better.
Sould come cheap too. Signed with Pats for one year and 2.7 mill in 2007 to try to salvage his image. Should go for 1 to 1.5 mil now.

He signed with the Pats for 3.6 mill for one year that would have gone to 19.6 mill for 3 years and a 6 year max that would have been 33.1 mill.
He should come cheap and if his contract is incentivized its worth putting him on the squad.

Northcutt.
I believe that Northcutt was a poor mans Stallworth. Not saying that that means much, but Stallworth definantly has the speed to be a good receiver. If we are taking a look at him hopefully he has better hands then any of the WR's we have had to catch the ball. Dropped passes kill a team, no matter if your the Colts *cough, cough* or a high school team... drive killers.

Except for the incident that landed him in jail...
I thought Stallworth was a pretty good citizen for the NFL.

The Lions will be lucky to get him:
From MLIVE
With all that being said, I think it would be smart for the Lions to try to sign Stallworth to an incentive-laden deal so he would have to prove himself to get paid. If he has anything left, he would be the No. 2 receiver the team needs, opposite Calvin Johnson.
I just don't think they'll have a chance to do that.
Stallworth's agent Drew Rosenhaus claims there are a number of teams interested in his client's services. Rumor has it, the Baltimore Ravens are one of those teams. They have been to the playoffs three of the last four seasons and had only one wide receiver catch more than 34 balls last season. They certainly could use another receiver.
Depending on which other teams are interested, and looking at the lack of quality receivers in this year's free agent class, I believe Stallworth will become a sought after commodity. He will sign a multi-year deal with a team looking to contend for a championship.
So, Lion's fans can talk all they want about whether or not the team should take a chance on Stallworth, but I don't think there's any chance he will want to play for this organization when he has other options.
Of course he would be a good signing!!!!

Why is it a guarantee it would be a good signing? At low money it's a nice low-risk-high reward signing, but for multi-year deal it's no guarantee he will be any good. He's been out of football for year and it's not like he was setting the world on fire when he was playing.
That said, I disagree with the writer that he gets a multi-year deal. I don't think anyone with the uncertainty going on with the league and then with him is going to offer him more than a 1 year deal.
